Fear not, local movie lovers. The closing credits haven’t run on a Dayboro entertainment staple.

After a two-month hiatus, the Dayboro Community Cinema returns to the Dayboro Community Hall this weekend with a screening an animated blockbuster.

The monthly cinema event, organised by the Dayboro Lions Club, has not been held since May due to the unavailability of volunteer members.

It returns this Saturday night with Brave, the latest animated blockbuster from Pixar, the studio responsible for Toy Story, Up, Finding Nemo, Cars and Wall-E.

Brave features the voice talents of Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters, Kelly Macdonald and Robbie Coltrane.

Dayboro Community Cinema Project Manager Ian Flinders said movies had been screened in the township for close to a century.

“The movies have been running in Dayboro since the 1920s so there’s quite a history behind it,” he said.

Sadly, the days of the local movie screenings could be numbered.

“They’re not going to be bringing out 35mm print soon, and in the next one or two years they will only be bringing out movies in digital format,” Mr Flinders said.

“It costs about $40,000 for a digital projector and then there are issues with obtaining the films and other contract and management issues.”

It currently costs the Dayboro Lions more than $600 to host a movie each month, including the costs for renting the new release movies, hiring the hall and paying the projectionist.

To break even the group needs 100 people to come through the doors for each film.

“We don’t do it for profit, just as a community service,” Mr Flinders said.

“Last year we did turn a small profit and we put that money back into the community.”

The Dayboro Community Cinema is held on the third Saturday of each month at the Dayboro Community Hall, at Bradley Street, Dayboro.

Brave will screen on 18 August at 7pm. Entry is $6 per person or $18 for a family.
