Joyner’s Ken Rays and Boondall’s John Ullock enjoy a workout under the supervision of Carly Ryan and Merendi Leverett from Merendi Health and Wellness.
Local residents can get in shape and lead an active lifestyle thanks to a nationwide health initiative.
Moreton Bay Regional Council is helping to deliver the Healthy Eating, Activity and Lifestyle (HEAL) program to help locals kick-start healthier lifestyles.
The free eight-week program will be held at Merendi Health and Wellness Centres at Brendale, Caboolture and Redcliffe.
The program is designed to improve the lifestyle of people suffering from existing chronic disease and people who are at risk of developing chronic disease.
It involves a two-hour weekly group session, which is split between exercise and supportive advice.
HEAL coordinator at Merendi Health and Wellness, Carly Ryan, said the program teaches participants about making their own choices about nutrition and physical activity, to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
“People will be able to apply the knowledge they learn in the classes,” Ms Ryan said.
Moreton Bay Mayor Allan Sutherland said the program is “the ideal way to keep your New Year’s resolution on track”.
“And it’s not all sweat and exercise. There’s a healthy dose of education thrown into the mix for longer term lifestyle change,” Mr Sutherland said.
The HEAL Program will also help those with an existing chronic disease to manage their condition.
Participants will receive an exercise plan to help them continue the program between sessions and after the program is complete.
The program is part of the Australian Government’s National Partnership Agreement on Preventative Health.
The HEAL Program is open to eligible Moreton Bay Region residents aged 18 years and over.
To be eligible, individuals must obtain a referral from their GP and have either an existing chronic disease or be at risk of developing chronic disease.
The program will start at Merendi Health and Wellness at 4/255 Leitchs Road, Brendale on Tuesdays from 14 February and Saturdays from 23 April.
