A Brendale-based football boot developer is kicking goals on the international sporting scene.

Nomis Sports Innovations Australia is taking on some of the world’s biggest sporting goods manufacturers – and winning.

The business, whose world headquarters is nestled among makers of industrial air compressors, vehicle suspension and composting systems, is going toe-to-toe with global sports apparel giants such as Reebok, adidas, Puma, Nike and Lotto in the International Football Boot Awards.

The awards were launched last year by leading UK-based consumer website footy-boots.com, with Nike receiving the top honour.

The awards recognise excellence in design, innovation, comfort and the aesthetic qualities of boots, the most vital tools of a footballer’s trade.

Nomis Sports is one of eight companies nominated for the illustrious title of Football Boot Brand of the Year.

While the award’s other nominees have around 450 years collective experience in the industry, Nomis Sports has been covering players’ feet for three short years since being established by English expatriate Simon Skirrow.

Nomis Sports’ Nick Halsall said the company, which also has European headquarters in Switzerland, was happy to be on the same playing field as sportswear’s biggest brands.

“It is always nice to be thought of along with such global companies as Nike, Reebok and adidas,” Mr Halsall said.

“However, we at Nomis feel we are currently the benchmark for innovations in football boots.  Our message of safety, comfort and technology is being well received as players get over ‘gimmicks’.

“But as the company grows it is important to know where it all started - that is very satisfying.”

Some of sport’s big name players have warmed to Nomis’ products.

Two years ago Australian soccer superstar Harry Kewell walked away from a multi-million-dollar deal with adidas, which reportedly netted him over $2 million a year, to wear Nomis boots for free.

“Having Harry Kewell wearing Nomis was very important - it gave the brand a football face and from our point of view Harry wore our boots for the right reasons,” Mr Halsall said.

Australian rugby league players Petero Civoniceva and Michael Crocker, hockey ace Nikki Hudson, AFL star Jason Akermanis and rugby union international Berrick Barnes have also used Nomis boots.

“Queensland is a farm for Australian sports stars and it was the perfect place to launch a new brand,” Mr Halsall said.

“As a company, we hope we have that Queensland attitude towards competition and success.”

And while Nomis Sports helps deck out football players from the Socceroos and Kangaroos football sides, roos themselves have played a bit role in the brand’s success.

A former senior executive with adidas, Simon Skirrow sources kangaroo leather from Narangba-based leather tannery Packer Leather to develop comfortable boots that better grip footballs.

The Football Boot Awards winners, decided by 12,000 votes at the footy-boots.com website, will be announced on 2 September.

The Nomis Glove FG boot has been shortlisted for two awards, including the coveted Football Boot of the Year award.

The Nomis Glove FG is also in line to be named Most Comfortable Football Boot, while the Nomis HG Supremacy DC HG is up for Best Looking Football Boot.
