Mt Mee’s Cynthia Idle and Kim Duncan and Wamuran’s Naomi Moorhead at the tennis court at Mt Mee to be replaced after more than 30 years.
They might not have the skills of a Federer, Nadal, Stosur or Williams, but social tennis players from Mt Mee will feel like champions when they take to a new court in the coming months.
The Mt Mee Sports Association is set to benefit from almost $58,000 in funding as part of the State Government’s Sport and Recreation Infrastructure program.
The money will be spent on a new tennis court at the corner of Robinson and Settlement Roads.
Mt Mee Sports Association Secretary Cynthia Idle said local players were “really stoked” to receive news of the funding.
“I’ve been applying for about five years to different places to get some funding, and we eventually won the lotto this time,” she said.
Ms Idle said the money would go towards installing a new Plexipave court at the facility, to replace a decrepit concrete playing surface that has seen better days.
“We think that it (the existing court) went down in about 1977, made with voluntary labour,” Ms Idle said.
“It’s been in a rough condition for the last 10 or 15 years, and it’s not been very conducive to getting active.”
Sport Minister Phil Reeves said the Sport Infrastructure program provides funding to sport and recreation clubs for capital works infrastructure to build and improve amenities, such as playing fields and lighting for ovals.
“Our local sporting clubs are the lifeblood of the community, and this infrastructure funding will provide a major boost to the area by creating jobs and giving people what they want and need,” Mr Reeves said.
“It will help increase their membership numbers and provide more opportunities for people to get involved and get active.”
Ms Idle, who has been part of the Mt Mee Sports Association for 25 years, said it was “very important” for smaller communities to have their own sporting facilities, “because it’s a meeting place for the locals”.
She said she expected Moreton Bay Regional Council to contribute around $20,000 to complete the tennis court upgrades, due later this year.
