Sharryn Draper of Dirty Boots Design

Name: Sharryn Draper

Business: Dirty Boots Design

Established: 2010

Based at: Armstrong Creek

What services does your business offer?  Graphic Design.  Print-based, as well as web graphics, business cards, CDs, signage, promo items, vehicle graphics, banners, and much more.

What areas do your clients come from?  Far and wide – so far I have had customers from the Sunshine Coast, Samford and South Africa!

What was your company’s first job?  A local job actually – an advertisement for Inline Fitness.

How did you make your first dollar?  As a guitar teacher for the adult education classes run at Pine Rivers High School, when I was in Year 12.

How did you get into your current line of work?  I am a qualified small offset printer operator, and started doing some design work there. That led to a fulltime desktop publisher position, then a graphic designer position at Moreton Bay Regional Council, until I started Dirty Boots Design.

Why is a business like yours so important?  I love graphic design, I love the freedom and creativity, I get a great sense of achievement when a customer is happy with one of my designs.

What sort of clients does your business provide services to?  Various businesses. Sometimes it is large organisations who outsource to me, and also smaller businesses who want to work with me to promote their business.

What do your customers most appreciate about your services?  I am more than happy to work with the customer to achieve what they want, and I try to provide as much input as possible to make the process as enjoyable and efficient.

What is the best part of your job?  Being able to create designs that I may see around town, or in circulation, or in the paper, that’s always a bit of a thrill!

What advice would you give to anyone considering working in your line of work?  Get hands-on experience, get to know the ‘other end’ of the business, as in supplying files to printers. Also investigate tertiary study.

If you didn’t work in your current job, what job would you like to do?  I would love to have a career in music, being able to write, perform and record and be successful enough that I could make a living out of it!

How do you spend your spare time?  I am currently learning how to ride a motorbike, and I also love camping, going to the movies, spending time with close friends and family having BBQs and a few drinks.
