A local property finance business is getting behind local school chaplains.

LJ Hooker Financial Services Brisbane North has organised a family fun day at Albany Creek on 31 July to help the Scripture Union Queensland provide chaplaincy services to three schools in the Pine Rivers area.

Event organiser Sharon Weber said it was the third year the business, located at Eatons Hill, has hosted the fundraiser.

She hopes the fundraiser will raise $10,000 for two local chaplains – Peter Gavel and Glenn Weatherford – to continue their work assisting children in local schools.

Mr Gavel is the chaplain for Albany Creek State School, while Mr Weatherford offers his services to students at Albany Hills and Kurwongbah State Schools.

Scripture Union Queensland’s Chris McNaught, whose organisation has placed chaplains in more than with 600 schools in the past 20 years, said it costs around $10,000 each year for a chaplain to attend a school one day per week.

Ms Weber said it was important to support the chaplains who offered support to our children.

“My view is that when we were younger these issues with bullying and drugs and alcohol were obviously around, but I don’t think that they were as publicly known back when I was at school,” Ms Weber said.

“I think that if the kids have the support in the primary schools and they’ve got the support when they go up to high school, it just may help those kids that are struggling in life to just deal with those issues.”

Activities at the family fun day will include a rock-climbing wall, jumping castle, mini sideshow alley, face painting, performances from school bands and a talent quest, with registrations open at 9am.

The event will also feature food stalls, as well as a silent auction of items such as sports memorabilia and movie tickets.

The family fun day will run from 9am to 3pm at Jacaranda Park, corner of Old Northern Road and Wruck Crescent, Albany Creek.  Phone 0407 162 212.
